The new permanent exhibition “1000 Years of Brauweiler Abbey” by the Rhineland Regional Association (LVR) is part of the anniversary program to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of Brauweiler Abbey in Pulheim. It shows the long and eventful history of this place, from its foundation by Benedictine monks in 1024 to its use as a workhouse and Gestapo prison in the 20th century. The exhibition brings together around 30 exhibits, including architectural fragments, historical documents and objects from the former workhouse.
Dr. Ulrich Hermanns was the general contractor for the exhibition design, media production and graphics. The exhibition has a multimedia and barrier-free design and includes video and audio stations with interviews with contemporary witnesses as well as touch and smell stations to bring history to life for the senses. In addition to the exhibition, the 2024 anniversary year includes over 160 events as well as a new monastery garden and an expanded memorial for the victims of the Nazi regime
