The Baltic Sea – The sea in our midst
July 2019

For the opening of the exhibition „Kein Lärm Meer“ at the OZEANEUM Stralsund, we have realized a new interactive multi-touch table.

Plastic waste in the ocean, excessive traffic on sea routes and the destruction of shores caused by growing tourism are only three factors that threaten the Baltic Sea ecosystem. To alert the museum visitors to these dangers, we developed an 84 “(213 cm) 4K multi-touch table. It has four interaction points, each one giving the opportunity to explore three problems and possible solutions. The selected topics are located on a picture-filling Baltic map.

The OZEANEUM opened in the summer of 2008 and is part of the German Maritime Museum Foundation. In five fascinating permanent exhibitions, you can not only get extensive information about the exploration and exploitation of the oceans, but also marvel at true-to-scale whale models and watch real penguins training.

CLIENT: Langen Foundation
09th September 2018 – 17th March 2019

The Langen Foundation on Museum Island Hombroich is displaying selected works from the Burger Collection, Hong Kong in the exhibition How to See [What Isn’t There]. 46 works will be on display, including sculptures, installations, paintings, photography, videos, VR and performances.

Burger Collection Hong Kong is a private collection of contemporary art which represents a broad spectrum of works from Euro-American, Indian and Asian art, reflecting a global approach to the collection.

The work of Canadian artist Jon Rafman is a world premiere and was created specifically for the exhibition: Deluge (Hombroich missile base) is a dark vision exploring the unseen dangers of war. Using 3D glasses, Rafman depicts the military past of Hombroich missile base with frantic virtual reality images that move between delirium and reality. Rafman’s images are computer-generated and convey a combination of the material and digital world, reality and technological effects.

235 MEDIA installed the work by Jon Rafman and supplied the hardware.

LWL Visitor Center in the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument

Posted by Lina Heuschen

CLIENT: Westfälisch-Lippische Vermögensverwaltungsgesellschaft mbH
July 2018

The Kaiser Wilhelm Monument in Porta Westfalica has been the region’s most significant landmark for the last 120 years. It was built from 1892 to 1896 in honour of Kaiser Wilhelm I. After a two-year renovation period, the monument reopened with a new visitor centre on 8th July 2018.

The new visitor centre is located inside the ring-shaped terrace, which has been rebuilt according to historical records. In the 270 m² exhibition area, visitors can find out more about the 88-metre-high monument at six interactive media stations. For example, there is a large interactive table dedicated to the development of the natural and cultural landscape around Porta Westfalica. Another of the installations consists of a 17-metre-wide panoramic wall and three interactive terminals which explain the history of Porta from its geological formation to the present day. The installation includes 33 historic hotspots, all of which can be explored in detail.

To provide a wider context beyond Porta and the monument, three interactive screens offer a multiple-choice questionnaire on the topic of cultural heritage, enabling visitors to reflect on their own opinions.

235 MEDIA was responsible for installing six media stations for the visitor centre, as well as producing and implementing the media content and realising the media technology.

30. June 2018

In the Brockenhaus, on North Germany’s highest mountain, the new permanent exhibition “Restricted Area – Experience History” was opened on June 30, 2018.

In the roof and cupola floors of the Brockenmuseum the visitors are introduced to, from today’s point of view, the almost unimaginable division of Germany in an atmospheric and playful way. A wall divides the first exhibition room in East and West. Digital and analogue observation slits and listening posts make it possible to take the respective position. In a chronological approach the relevant subjects around the surveillance cupola “Urian” are enacted, here the valuable exhibits of the previous exhibition radio/television technology are integrated.

In the historic cupola itself visitors can, among other things, immerse themselves in the original aerials for the surveillance technology using modern media. Contemporary witnesses give the location’s history a personal and human dimension and build a bridge from the past to the present. Further interactive exhibits also make the history of the cupola an exciting experience for children.

“During the cold war the Russians spied on the Brocken on their enemies in the West. In the Brockenhaus one can now be taken back to this era.” Quote: mdr Sachsen-Anhalt.

235 MEDIA has designed and realized the exhibition as well as the media technology and media production.

May 2018

The Hoesch Museum arose from the collaboration of former “Hoeschianers”, the Museum for Art and Cultural History and the Foundation for the West-Phalia Economic Archive. The museum is housed in the historic gatekeeper’s lodge and gives an overview of more than 160 years of city history of the steel industry in Dortmund.

The re-worked media installation “Phoenix from the Ashes” was created as far back as 2005 and has been brought right up to data technically, graphically and in terms of content, with an 84” multi-touch monitor with 4K resolution. Based on an aerial photo of the city, visitors can find out about the plans and perspectives of 11 former industrial areas in Dortmund. With functions such as comparisons of aerial shots from 1969 and 2017, the museum can display the structural change in Dortmund over the years. With numerous contributions on leisure, living and working, visitors can find out about the latest developments.

235 MEDIA designed and implemented the media production and also installed the media technology.

Karl-Marx-Haus

Opening: May 5, 2018

The Museum Karl-Marx-Haus in Trier is the birthplace of Karl Marx, and it opened a new permanent exhibition on May 5, 2018, focusing on the history of the impact of Marx’s ideas up to the present day.

235 MEDIA realized six media installations, produced and implemented media content for the new permanent exhibition at the Karl-Marx-Haus and produced and implemented the media content. In addition to three monitor installations and an interactive audio chair, an LED mesh and an interactive reading book are components of the scenography.

The media installations set a deliberate counterpoint to the concreteness of the contents in the exhibition and see themselves as contemplative resting points in the midst of a challenging abundance of content. For example, the wall-filling LED mesh uses its coarse resolution and the small viewing distance of the visitors to span an associative panorama of the critique of capitalism in a flood of images with iconic representations from contemporary politics.

The interactive reading book uses the opposite effect as a medium that is capable of reproducing content in a bundled and pointed manner. In its formal form of presentation, it also underscores the paramount importance that the medium of the book had for Karl Marx personally and for the worldwide dissemination of his ideas.

20th April til 12th August 2018

Marina Abramovic is one of the most renowned and controversial contemporary artists – especially with her ground-breaking performances, in which she repeatedly explores her own physical and psychological limits. “The Cleaner” is the first major retrospective of the performance artist, which can be seen exclusively in Germany from 20 April onward at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn.

The exhibition extensively reflects the facets of her work, whereby personal experience and responsibility are a main focus for her. Films, photography, paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations as well as selected archive material show the subject and media range of the artist. Some re-performances and participative work enrich the intensive exhibition experience.

235 MEDIA installed 35 projections, 25 monitor installations and the audio technology of the exhibition.

CLIENT: Museum Ludwig
18th April til 12th August 2018

The Association for Modern Art at the Ludwig Museum awarded Haegue Yang the Wolfgang-Hahn-Prize in the year 2018. The Ludwig Museum is presenting a first major overview of the artist and the diversity of her work with 120 exhibits.

The abbreviation ETA stands for “Estimated Time of Arrival” and refers to the artist’s career in transit and constantly changing locations, who now has studios in Seoul and Berlin and has been exhibiting internationally since 1994.

With her very varied work Haegue Yang has evaded being assigned to a particular category. Her works are, on the one hand, critical of institutions, conceptual with historical references, and, at the same time sensually complex and emotionally charged. The overview covers more the 1500 m² of space in which the spatial scenography picks up the conceptional dynamic of the works.

235 MEDIA has realised the media installations and the rather unconventional lighting concept and supplied the hardware.

The LWL Industriemuseum (Westphalian State Museum of Industrial Heritage and Culture) is Germany’s oldest and largest industrial museum. Covering the Ruhr area and Münster region to Gernheim an der Weser, visitors can discover the timeline of the German industrial era in eight central locations.

Since October 2016, TextilWerk Bocholt, one of the eight locations, presents the history of textile manufacturers in Westphalia across two floors of the permanent textile history exhibition.

235 MEDIA has developed an interactive multi-touch table with tangibles for the exhibition. With the help of the multi-touch table’s object recognition, interactions can be brought to life in a fun way. This allows links to be made between real objects, called “tangibles”, and digital information. For TextilWerk Bocholt, rolls of different coloured yarn were transformed into tangibles, whereby each colour represents a specific topic. Once a tangible is placed on the multi-touch table, the relevant content is automatically activated. By rotating the tangible, additional sub-menus are activated.

235 MEDIA tangible tables are now available with customisable tangibles, multi-touch monitors and software.

Our IT Development and Consulting departments aim to identify redundant functions in the design phase of proposed applications and thus rule them out in the realisation. Just by focusing on the functions actually needed, we achieve a reduction in complexity, which has a positive effect on material and energy inputs: miniaturisation of form, stabilisation and longevity of function, reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

For several years, we have systematically worked with increasingly powerful yet more economical embedded systems. Through our in-house developments such as KLICK-KLACK, the automatic on-off control, or the LOOPO media player based on single board computers, we have consistently developed modular extensions. Aside from the portfolios of major manufacturers, this allows the design of diverse applications to be stabler, more cost-effective, and more energy efficient.

At the threshold of science and art, the exhibition around the theme of outer space showed a range of exhibits from the areas of research, technology, history, art and literature. The curators deployed a poetic panorama of artefacts from space and astronomy, documentary material, movies, comics, space design, artistic works and multimedia installations which covered the enormous spectrum of the topic which has fascinated humanity for thousands of years and which has lost none of its appeal.

Reminiscent of the legendary cockpit of the spaceship Orion, one of the 60`s German TV series “Raumpatrouille“, whose controls had been created in part from re-purposed household appliances, 235 MEDIA realised the installation “Countdown minus 10” for the exhibition in the form of a “media cockpit”, an interactive table with a wall projection where visitors could take a flight through the history of space travel. Spread over five main themes, 235 MEDIA produced a total of 19 comprehensive animations which included surprising facts, images and films.

The installation “Countdown minus 10” was designed, created, editorially overseen, programmed and technically realised by 235 MEDIA.

“Outer Space has become a unique show because this is where facts and fiction, art and science really meet on a par.”

CLIENT: Stadt Aachen
June 2014

The largest special exhibition focusing on Charlemagne in Aachen was held in the Coronation Hall in Aachen City Hall. It invited visitors to explore courtly life in Carolingian times, showed Charlemagne as a king and military leader travelling between imperial palaces, used archaeological and art-historical evidence to outline the material foundations of his rule and provided an insight into the external role models that motivated him to create a ‘place of power’ in Aachen.

The media presentations not only provided visitors with in-depth factual information, but also enabled them to experience elements of popular science by offering different depths of information ranging from striking demonstrations through to a variety of educationally oriented informative displays depending on the topic in question.

In order to make the exhibition as attractive as possible, these were additionally joined by four complex media installations. Upon entering the hall, visitors were first greeted by an elaborate 3D visualisation of the shrine of Charlemagne in Aachen Cathedral in order to acclimatise them to the atmosphere of the exhibition. In the middle of the exhibition, a video panorama with a diameter of 5.50m presented life in the Palace of Aachen.

At the end of their tour of the exhibition, visitors were able to view two interactive large-format installations that focused on the nature of the phenomenon of power in the present day and gave visitors the opportunity to actively participate in this discussion.

235 MEDIA was involved in the concept development and detailed planning of the exhibition and was responsible for the technical planning, media planning, and screen design of every interactive media installation.

September 2012 til May 2013

With 630,000 visitors in 2011, the LVR – Archaeological Park Xanten (LVR-APX) is one of the most-visited museums in Germany and, at the same time, one of the most important archaeological monuments in Europe. The new “Bread and Games” visitor experience, installed in the north ambulatory of the partially reconstructed amphitheatre and the three adjoining rooms (“Carcer IV–VI”), provides visitors with information on the topic of “Gladiators” in an authentic setting.

235 MEDIA installed doors with video players and audio systems with an auto-loop function in the outdoor area of the arena ambulatory. An interactive animation of a bear is installed in “Carcer V”. If visitors approach the bear’s cage, the bear rushes to the bars, stands up and growls at the visitors. If the visitors stay longer, the bear hits the bars with its paw and roars again. The interaction is based on sensor technology and Arduino programming, and the image is rear-projected.

All of the equipment is built into air-conditioned housings with self-regulating heating and ventilation in order to protect the technology from the effects of weather.

235 MEDIA planned and realised all of the installations.

April 2013

The video lounge in the Kunstmuseum Bonn, which makes the video archive accessible for individual use by visitors, has been modernised and expanded. 235 MEDIA developed a new user interface that makes a database search possible as well as the playing of films. For the video search via a touchscreen monitor the visitor can use either a list view of the works according to artist, title and year of origin or a full text search.

All video works were digitalised and converted by 235 MEDIA, and the associated metadata from the print catalogue was digitally recorded. The video data and content information were integrated into a specially conceived content management system that is now permanently available to the Kunstmuseum for the independent recording of new video art works.

As well as conception, design development and programming, 235 MEDIA also undertook the conception of media technology to ensure the smooth integration of the archive in the walk-through installation of Stefan Eberstad which contains the video lounge.

MARCH 2013

Duisburg’s Museum of Culture and Local History greets visitors in the newly designed “Mercator treasure room”, and takes them on a voyage of discovery on the trail of cartographer Gerhard Mercator, creator of the world’s first atlas in the 16th century. With the cartography technique he invented, the Mercator projection, he laid the foundation for modern cartography. Even today captains and pilots navigate with maps which are created based on this principle. A variety of media installations ensure modern and fun communication of the facts of Mercator’s life and work.

235 MEDIA designed, developed graphically, programmed and realised two interactive media installations for the Mercator treasure room. The monitor installation “Red Wall” gives information about the intellectual conditions and cultural-historical background of the Renaissance, the era of Mercator. The “Interactive World Atlas” gives visitors the possibility of browsing through Mercator’s magnum opus, the “Atlas sive Cosmograhicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Figura” (“Atlas or cosmographic mediations on the creation of the world and the form of creation”), and to examine it closely via a zoom function.

As well as this, 235 MEDIA installed all the media and control technology in the Mercator treasure room.

CLIENT: Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany
NOVEMBER 2011

For the exhibition “ART AND DESIGN FOR ALL – The Victoria and Albert Museum”  at the Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonn 235 MEDIA developed and designed two interactive tables.

These tables feature an interactive world map of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. By interacting with the tables visitors inform themselves about the Victorian era in a complex, fascinating and extraordinary way. With the aid of a timeline and eight categories, such as technology, industry and politics for instance, the visitors explore and experience various global chains of events that will bring the 19th century closer.

CLIENT: DEUTSCHES BERGBAU-MUSEUM
2011

Mining and transport of saltpetre and other raw materials throughout the past centuries are the topic of a multimedia installation developed by 235 MEDIA.  In a 360-degree roundel suspended from the ceiling nine monitors have been fixed as a panorama. They synchronously show a film collage flowing over the borders of the monitors. The collage, composed of photographs and films and accentuated by a sound design, tells the exciting story of the important raw materials.

Grillo

Client: Grillo-Werke AG
MARCH 2011

The “Grillo” family-operated business has focused on zinc and sulphur production since 1842. The family’s documented history goes back to the early 16th century. 235 MEDIA has created an interactive table to make the family tree with over 1500 members and the family business history conveniently accessible.

In addition, the documented family history can be explored in nine showcase-monitors. The original documents and business correspondence of the company’s ancestors and their descendants is often still written in “Sütterlin” , (old German script) and is transcribed by integrated touch screens. The company still owns the authentic muffle tubes that were used for zinc production in the 18th century. Diverse projections are installed inside of these clay pipes, showing the chemical and visual reaction of zinc-recovery as well as filmed documentation about historical zinc recovery.

CLIENT: Landes-Stiftung Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck
26. DECEMBER 2011

The goal was to develop modular and reusable exhibition architecture for the museum created by Richard Meier. The art bulletin (1-2/10011 edition, page 56), reports on the results: “The fantastic spatial effect of Richard Meier’s museum construction project is used effectively to establish surprising perspectives and visions by alternating between intimate built-ins and open views.” Selected small sculptures have been effectively placed in an open view with three sequential lighting conditions: “Sophisticated lighting effects provide an additional subjectivity of the view: The versatility of Arp’s artistic base element has been effectively staged.” (Art bulletin, see above)

Security sensors, developed by 235 MEDIA as well, enable the open positioning of exhibits on large wall pedestals.

DB Museum, Planet Eisenbahn

CLIENT: DB MUSEUM

DECEMBER 2010

Until the 27th February 2011 the DB Museum celebrated 175 years of railway in Germany with its special exhibition “Planet Railway”. For this exhibition several multimedia interactive installations were realised by 235 MEDIA. Using intuitive movements the visitors can turn a seemingly three-dimensional globe and in doing so learn interesting information about the development of the railway system. The radar-touch used here allows for a multi-touch interaction without actually contact. On an eight meter half-round wall, pictures of the future railway assemble to futuristic sounds from particles floating in from the room. The visitors are able to choose pictures from the double projection via a capacititive sensor system and receive further information. The Railomate, a 42“-touch screen with camera, the visitors can virtually choose between different railway caps and put them on. The result can be sent home via e-mail as a greeting.

An interactive table demonstrates to the visitor that the railway was a driving factor for the introduction of a common time zone in the German Empire. An animated map of around 1880, with sound design and speech, first shows how the railway net expanded and more and more trains ran. Eight realistic church spire models show different times. On the sound off a bell the clocks synchronise and the trains drive smoothly throughout the whole empire.

Medienstationen im Wiedenbrücker Schule Museum

Posted by Lina Heuschen

CLIENT: WIEDENBRÜCKER SCHULE MUSEUM
NOVEMBER 2008

On the 28th of November the Wiedenbrücker Schule Museum opened, which is dedicated to the outstanding sacred and profane craft products of the 19th and 20th centuries.

In four different multi-media stations 235 MEDIA presents the most important works of art that were created in Wiedenbrück and distributed throughout Germany. An interactive table takes visitors back to the beginning of the exhibition, to the heyday of the workshops, and a large-format projection onto a triptych shows in detail the magnificent furnishings of the Church of St. Ida, the Wiedenbrücker emblem.

The distribution of the craft products remote from East Westfalia – with pictures and documents from Berlin to Bochum – is illustrated in the media stations as are the strong structural changes the churches were subject to during this period.
