Of the seven international Guggenheim museums, the Guggenheim Bilbao is the most spectacular. Frank O. Gehry’s famous deconstructivist building is housing the exhibition “Bill Viola: A Retrospective”, which provides a thematic and chronological cross-section of works by one of the most important artists of our time. The retrospective begins with his early single-channel videotapes, including iconic works such as “The Reflecting Pool” (1977–79) and “Four Songs” (1976), where the central themes of Viola’s work were already evident: time and its deconstruction, the exploration of human existence, and experimentation with the media manipulation of images and sounds. Significant works from the 80s, 90s and 2000s trace the development of the large-scale audiovisual masterpieces that brought Bill Viola worldwide renown, and which reveal their full magic in the Guggenheim Bilbao.

Since 2007, 235 MEDIA has been responsible for providing and installing the complex media technology for all of Bill Viola’s major exhibitions in Europe, including the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, and the Grand Palais in Paris.

July 2017

The town of Düren is continuing to expand its leisure infrastructure. With financial support from RWE Power and Langerwehe District Council, the redevelopment company indeland GmbH has established a multimedia and interactive information centre on a previously disused site at Langerwehe station. The new facility is known as the “InfoCenter indeland” and provides future visitors with details on the leisure activities Indeland has to offer as well as information on the history of the region and the local lignite industry.

The information centre opened in July 2017. It places a particular emphasis on involving and engaging visitors by including multimedia information stands and interactive areas. Those who are interested may, for example, take the opportunity to try out an e-bike simulator. Visitors can also use an e-card module to take selfies and send these as greetings from Indeland.

Media technology and adaptation and expansion of existing contents for the media stations were realised by 235 MEDIA.

As part of the 2017 Anniversary of the Reformation, the Deichtorhallen Hamburg is presenting a large exhibition of Bill Viola’s works. In his works, the American artist deals with personal as well as universal experiences, through which he presents his emotional and spiritual confrontation with important metaphysical themes such as life, death and transformation.

The exhibition will show 13 of Viola’s cinematic works, including huge video installations up to ten metres in height, which will transform the architecture of the Deichtorhallen’s darkened Hall for Contemporary Art into a cathedral of the 21st century.

The technical planning and implementation was undertaken by 235 MEDIA, who will also provide the video and audio technology. For this exhibition, 235 MEDIA designed and built a custom screen measuring 5.6 metres in width and 10 metres in height, in an extremely slimline design.

October 2016

The LWL Industriemuseum (Westphalian State Museum of Industrial Heritage and Culture) is Germany’s oldest and largest industrial museum. Covering the Ruhr area and Münster region to Gernheim an der Weser, visitors can discover the timeline of the German industrial era in eight central locations.

Since October 2016, TextilWerk Bocholt, one of the eight locations, presents the history of textile manufacturers in Westphalia across two floors of the permanent textile history exhibition.

235 MEDIA has developed an interactive multi-touch table with tangibles for the exhibition. With the help of the multi-touch table’s object recognition, interactions can be brought to life in a fun way. This allows links to be made between real objects, called “tangibles”, and digital information. For TextilWerk Bocholt, rolls of different coloured yarn were transformed into tangibles, whereby each colour represents a specific topic. Once a tangible is placed on the multi-touch table, the relevant content is automatically activated. By rotating the tangible, additional sub-menus are activated.

235 MEDIA tangible tables are now available with customisable tangibles, multi-touch monitors and software.

REMOTEWORDS.32

REMOTEWORDS writes on the rooftop of 235 MEDIA in collaboration with Marcel Odenbach

We warmly invite you!
Opening on Friday, 8th July 2016, 4pm to 9pm
Am Kölner Brett 1, 50825 Cologne
Introduction by Claudia Dichter at 6pm
Food and drinks provided.

REMOTEWORDS.32 consists of the now 32nd stage of the long-term art project ‘REMOTEWORDS’ by Achim Mohné and Uta Kopp. REMOTEWORDS writes short messages in large letters on rooftops in order to distribute information via navigation and satellite systems such as Google Earth, which are “hacked” and used for artistic purposes. Unique messages are constantly developed for various REMOTEWORDS locations, such as the University of Art in Berlin, the Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn and the H3K House of Electronic Arts in Basel.

The words on the rooftop of 235 MEDIA in Cologne were selected by the Cologne artist, Marcel Odenbach, and are borrowed from a poem by Ingeborg Bachmann written in 1952. For the artists, the wording represents a relativisation of the media images and calls for the constant questioning of supposed ‘photographic authenticity’.

On the occasion of the rooftop’s opening on 8th July 2016, a radio-controlled CCTV drone by the friendly film production company, TIMESCOPE films, will fly over the roof of 235 MEDIA, transmitting the aerial images and revealing the message.

In May 2016, the new exhibition area “Root Cave” was opened in the treetop path in Hainich national park. As a mini-format person, the visitor strolls through the cave-like display, meeting not only creatures of the darkness, but also finding out how the giant trees take on water and other nutrients for growth from the soil, how the “underground world” lives and works, and also which of its important inhabitants are responsible for waste disposal, for example. The elaborately designed display is a varied mixture of interactive elements and models you can hold, as well as instructive explanations. For example, the station “Types of soil and structure”, where the visitor can get more information using an augmented reality application. Or the station “Decomposition of a leaf”, where the visitor can watch the decomposition of a leaf on a time-line, using a slide control.

235 MEDIA produced all the media technology and was deeply involved in the production of the 29 installations.

On 22 February, the six new underground stations on the Wehrhahn line were opened in Düsseldorf. This extraordinary project was completed after a 15-year collaboration between architects, artists, engineers and the municipal authority.

The Benrather Straße station was designed by the installation artist Thomas Stricker under the project name “Heaven above, heaven below” (German: Himmel oben, Himmel unten). The entire intermediate level, which is around 70 x 15 m, replicates the inside of a spaceship. Six large video screens were built into the metal walls, showing planets of our solar system and stars in the Milky Way. Together, the six animations form a complete film which is displayed on the six screens in such a way as to give the impression of travelling through space; thus creating the illusion that the entire station is flying through space

The installation brings the heavens to the earth, swaps up for down and transforms heavy to light. The vastness of the universe is transferred to the confines of the underground. The architecture appears mobile, like a spaceship moving through the infinite expanse of space.

As in the past, this year 235 MEDIA once more developed room-filling video compositions, which played in keeping with the sounds and rhythms in the whole space of the church, using centrally-controlled video projectors, in order to support the artists visually.

Green Media

Posted by Lina Heuschen

To reduce energy consumption and save CO2 – that is the simple idea behind our Green Media initiative. We are working to develop energy-saving potential for our customers and to exploit it to the full. Through the intelligent combination of the latest IT technology and our in-house development of products under the label 235 MEDIA ®evolution, we are constantly optimising the performance and energy efficiency of our IT and media applications.

Our IT Development and Consulting departments aim to identify redundant functions in the design phase of proposed applications and thus rule them out in the realisation. Just by focusing on the functions actually needed, we achieve a reduction in complexity, which has a positive effect on material and energy inputs: miniaturisation of form, stabilisation and longevity of function, reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

For several years, we have systematically worked with increasingly powerful yet more economical embedded systems. Through our in-house developments such as KLICK-KLACK, the automatic on-off control, or the LOOPO media player based on single board computers, we have consistently developed modular extensions. Aside from the portfolios of major manufacturers, this allows the design of diverse applications to be stabler, more cost-effective, and more energy efficient.

Maintenance & Support

Posted by Lina Heuschen

Multi-media and computer-based systems have become standard technologies in the exhibition and events fields. Checking and maintaining the complex technical components is absolutely essential for guaranteeing a successful presentation strategy.

The increasing sophistication of media technology and its need to be continuously in operation present a challenge to those responsible for support and maintenance. For this reason, we have developed a comprehensive service catalogue detailing all the necessary steps for the successful upkeep of multi-media and computer-based systems.

CHINA 8

15th May til 13th September 2015

Nine museums in eight cities on the Rhine and Ruhr have joined forces to present contemporary art from China in the most extensive exhibition Europe has ever known in its museums. Around 120 artists and 500 works of painting, photography, calligraphy, ink painting, sculpture, installation and video art represent a cross-section of the current artistic positions and trends in the world’s largest economy.

Featuring 25 video and sound installations, the “Glaskasten” sculpture museum in Marl makes up the setting for the main media art venue. One of the technical highlights of “CHINA 8” is to be found at the “NRW-Forum” in Dusseldorf in the form of “Related to YA”, an installation by Wang Gongxin: the visitor is visually and acoustically catapulted into a world full of vibrations, shocks, clacking sounds and twitching pictures on nine synchronised vertical projections that reflect the hustle and the bustle of everyday life in China.

235 MEDIA completed the entire media-technology set-up in a mere ten days for 44 video installations at eight venues. A total of 92 monitors, ranging from 19 to 75 inches diagonal, along with 31 projectors and 112 media players were mounted, installed or set-up, all connected by several kilometres of cable, which proved to be a major logistical challenge.
